Communication Access UK - inclusive communication for all

Communication Access means supporting people with communication difficulties more effectively.

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists has launched an inclusive communication initiative, which is supported by the Stroke Association, Disability Rights UK, Motor Neurone Disease, National Network of Parent Carer Forums and Communication Matters charities plus the Business Disability Forum. The initiative is aimed at encouraging businesses to adopt the Communication Access Symbol, underpinned by standards which have been developed into detailed guidance and an easily accessible eLearning package. Once these have been adopted and implemented, a business will be accredited and promoted as ‘Communication Accessible’ and placed on a national register.

Through the training (which is at no cost), staff will gain the skills and confidence to engage with people with communication difficulties much more effectively.

By displaying the symbol, people with communication difficulties will recognise that a business has made the appropriate adjustments to support their needs and they can engage with greater confidence.
