Aspira - Carers and the workplace

By Heather Lewis 22 June 2017.

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. This year it took place 12-18 June and it prompted a lot of interesting research to come to the forefront.  Research by GRiD, an organisation which aims to enhance and promote the benefits of group workplace protection found that issues around childcare and eldercare issues were a main reason for absence from work and lost productivity.

This is a significant problem accounting for almost half of absences of up to 6 months. Aside from the direct caring responsibilities, the stress and anxiety involved can also contribute to mental health problems, another major cause of absence.
